Why isn’t there a single medical licence for all doctors in Canada? http://dlvr.it/Qw0TQR pic.twitter.com/DZIdL1IYD4

And why isn't there a single electricians' licence for all electricians in Canada. Same schooling but two licences. They all learn the same 24 competencies.

Certainly reads like another area where federalism is at its worst, allowing provincial feifdoms to put up roadblocks, money grabs. Also reads like there is not enough will to introduce a better system adapted to today's health needs in many CDN provinces

In 2014, there were more than 30000 preventable deaths at the hands of doctors. Makes one wonder the value of a licence in the first place. That's 150x the number of deaths from guns, and people want those banned outright.

Great, but now compare that number to to many they saved.

Since when's that matter? The usual line is "if it saves a life". Well 30k is a lot bigger than 1.

I don't know the source from which you extrapolated that # but, if they determined that 30K died due to doctors negligence then (if study done right) they must have also looked at total # patients saved by doctors and then also took into account the total # of patients treated.

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/health-and-fitness/health/toronto-hospitals-embark-on-safety-initiative-to-prevent-medical-error-deaths/article30610569/ … Since when does the good something does or can do matter in whether something should be banned? We don't allow people to defend themselves with firearms because they are scary, well more people die due to doctors in Canada than guns in the USA.

For many of the same reasons that require doctors in the US to get licensed in each state. Each province and state wants to be in control of a professional operating in their jurisdiction and don't want to rely on other jurisdictions.

And unless all jurisdictions have the same laws or rules for doctors to follow, one jurisdiction is going to be concerned that another jurisdiction will have "lesser" competencies.
