I remember my son at 10 talking about ‘the old giants in the woods’, trees like this in the dark by the road as we drove. He didn’t find them scary though, not monsters. Mind you, with forests full of trolls, Norwegian kids are a tough scare...

The first time I saw them in Japan was from a gondola at Zao ski area. I just thought they were cool but was later to find out they are called “monsters”. The literal meaning in Japanese is “frost covered trees”pic.twitter.com/Y0p4U4GUAV
