If you have been affected here is the crash course. 1. You are not your job. We intertwine dev a lot with our identities and it feels like that is stripped away during a layoff. This is not true. You are amazing & do a hard job and losing your employment does not change that.

2. THIS IS NOT YOUR FAULT. This was a buisness choice. This is NOT personal and you couldn't have doen anything to prevent it. Do not ask why. Do not play that game. It's not you. It's people above you making bad buisness choices.

3. Apply for unemployment tomorrow. First thing tomorrow. Today, cry and hug your buds and drink and bake cookies and do what you gotta do. But do apply for unemployment right after that.

4. Everyone wants to help you land on your feet. Old buddies will reach out but it is also ok to ask for help. A lot if us have been there and we want to help you because we know how bad it is. Ask for a referral, a resume edit, a portfolio review. We will do it.

5. Listen to me: it will all be ok in the end. Even if you're not sure right this second. You gotta keep your headspace optimistic. I called my layoff time "funemployment" and I worked on projects and cooked and read books and games. It kept my spirits up.

If you are a survivor and did not lose your job: help those who were let go but also deal with your own feelings. You're probably a wash of emotions. Guilt and sadness are common. Lean on your employed friends to deal with those feelings.

& lastly remember that a year from now, today will be a bad memory. You will be okay even if it does not feel like it today.

Since a lot of folks are rt-ing, here is a follow up for day 2. 6. Now it's day two. Today you need to apply for unemployment. I know this sucks but it helps so much. You can do this online. Stay in your comfy jammies after you've slept in. Get some coffee. Then apply online.

6 cont. I think I felt bad taking unemployment the first time I got laid off so I put off applying for it. Don't. It's a social safety net you have paid into and it's totally okay for you to use this. Do not feel bad. It is there for you to use while you get through this.

7. After that's done it is CV/portfolio time depending on your role. Write it up & ask some buddies for feedback. We will give it because we want to help out. It is ok to ask directly for this help from colleagues and friends. We want you to succeed.

8. If you have a good CV or portfolio today you can start applying or asking for referals. But if you don't have this until next week be kind to yourself. It takes a bit to get this stuff together and application ready. That is normal.

9. There are job lists circulating Twitter right now and retweets of jobs. Save these to look up later and apply later. They are a life saver. People who know how overwhelming this is put those together for you in advance because they know this sucks.

10. Even if you can't get to everything today, that's ok. The day is now yours and nobody else's. I loved to cook low cost meals while funemployed. I made a lot of veggie chili (meat is expensive) and rice based dishes. Give yourself time to do stuff that isn't the job hunt.

11. Day 2 is very hard since it is the first day of you not doing your normal routine. Plus the unknown is terrifying. It's gonna be a roller coaster but you know what, it WILL be ok soon. Hold onto that.

Oh, also: crying a lot is normal. I know I cried after being laid off before. Weirdly I cried more when a previous studio eliminated 38 jobs on a single day (out of 200ish). Idk, survivor or laid off person, if you gotta cry give yourself a good cry, this is okay to do
