I read the piece not about ethics in general, but about ethics as a keyword funded in a certain way by an industry with certain interest. For some of us who care about ethics and justice, it was helpful in mapping out dynamics often hidden behind closed doors.

Given the critique he raises about corporate funding of many major data ethics related think tanks, naming the women in charge of these orgs would actually open them up to misogynistic internet attacks. To not name them but to name the orgs keeps focus on the structural forces.

I do want to point out that
@annaeveryday,@Greene_DM, and@luke_stark use discourse analysis to argue very similarly to Rodrigo in their piece Better Nicer Clearer Fairer http://dmgreene.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Greene-Hoffmann-Stark-Better-Nicer-Clearer-Fairer-HICSS-Final-Submission-Revised.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwjzx6-G48nmAhXeJzQIHVwmAs0QFjAAegQIBBAB&usg=AOvVaw1zZiNZ5Zy1dgFSrUS-Nk50 …Prikaži ovu nit -
I also want to point out that that politically risky organizing work doesn't always seek credit or benefit from it. In San Diego, it takes coalition to change our smart city tech and giving credit to one or a few can endanger organizers or devalue the work of the many required.

I don’t mind criticism as long as it is specific, well-researched, and consistent. Clearly there are lots of us working on ethics AND strong regulation and the article just kinda shrugs off the possibility of pursuing both.

But here does mention the laws and activist groups. Can we read generously? This guy has risked his health and sanity to offer some important insight into hidden processes. Why not call him in instead of calling him out and delegtimizing the center of the argument?

Indeed, Facebook was just revealed to be funding an ethics-not-regulation institute in Germany to the tune of 7.5M with some misleading press around its independence: https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&u=https%3A%2F%2Fnetzpolitik.org%2F2019%2Fein-geschenk-auf-raten%2F …

There’s no doubt that “ethics” is inadequate frame to evaluate almost anything including AI, but this article’s presentation of a very wide and uneven field of work only makes sense if its axiomatic that platform scale AI is BAD and so any other conclusion smacks of corruption.

Question from professional ethicist: can you clarify "There’s no doubt that “ethics” is inadequate frame to evaluate almost anything including AI" ? Thanks.
