The brain as seen from a precessing proton. →At 7T, protons rotate so incredibly fast! It takes longer for radio waves to travel through the brain (speed of light) than one full proton rotation. →Swirly pattern comes from the right-hand-rule of the Larmor equation.

New preprint from and me. Accepted-in-principle as a stage 1 registered report, so no results yet. But let me tell you why I'm excited about this paper (and why you might be too)

Rereading Lykken: Lykken, D. T. (1991). What’s Wrong with Psychology Anyway? In D. Cicchetti & W. Grove (Eds.), Thinking clearly about psychology (Vol. 1, pp. 3–39). What a remarkable paper. A few things that stood out to me. 🧵

I think the real lesson of places like DeepMind, Janelia, and Allen Brain Inst. is the amazing things scientists can do when you actually give them the resources they need to do their work properly, instead of spending so much energy hustling for cash/resources.

Dual* first* author papers: did you know you can cite them throughout your paper as Jane, John et al. (2019)? copyeditors just did that for our proofs. Yay! This is what I call true shared first authorship. how about same in ?

Google Dataset Search is now officially out of beta. "Dataset Search has indexed almost 25 million of these datasets, giving you a single place to search for datasets & find links to where the data is." Nice work, Natasha Noy and everyone else involved!

Excellent, necessary, and well executed work by et al. Undercitation of female authors is driven by male-led labs, worsens in spite of growth of women in academia. Hoping to have a convo with & on agent based approaches to interventions.

I think data science is science when: 1. it uses the scientific method, 2. produces knowledge (not just practical results), 3. that knowledge is potentially generalizable, 4. and actually generalized (i.e. steps are taken for that knowledge to be usable by others).

There is one main thing students should take from all this. Academia is *deeply* idiosyncratic. There are no rules. There are some customs that vary across institutions and fields and there's no fool proof way of predicting what is what without asking.
