While "Legendary" is unfortunately just the latest LGBTQ-inclusive programming to get canceled by their network this year, the creative team & Scout Productions prioritized uplifting unheard talent and voices and were hopeful that these types of stories are able to be told again.

Sony's Our Ladies follows five Catholic Scottish teen girls in 1996 over the course of one day as they travel to Edinburgh for a choir competition and then return home. Two of the girls, Kay & Finnoula, share a kiss and ultimately move on from their small town.

This year's SRI found that of the 16 LGBTQ inclusive films released by seven major distributors in 2021, nine (56%) passed the Vito Russo Test. This is 12% of the 77 total films released from those studios in that year. Let's look at some of those nine that passed! 📽️

As we've seen progress in recent years with more LGBTQ characters, it's clear it's time to update our test. VRT remains an evaluation of the minimal representation expected & gives a roadmap for continued movement. Passing the VRT is a first step, rather than the finish line.

Today, we're adding a fourth point to the Vito Russo Test. 4) LGBTQ character’s story must not be outwardly offensive (avoids defaulting to well-known tropes or stereotypes with no further development). In films with multiple LGBTQ characters, at least one character must pass

Historically, the VRT has consisted of three points: 1) Movie includes a character who is identifiably LGBTQ in storytelling. 2) Character is not solely defined by their LGBTQ identity 3) Character is integral to plot & removal would have significant effect on storytelling

GLAAD launched the Vito Russo Test with our first SRI in 2013. Named after our co-founder & LGBTQ film historian Vito Russo and inspired by the Bechdel Test, the test represents a minimum standard for inclusive storytelling. Today, we're expanding our criteria. 🧵
