Maybe better stated as: "It turns out Tom Cotton wrote this just to punk us."
It was an insincere, bad-faith essay; it was "ha ha made you look", dressed up like an actual argument.
NY times reached out to Cotton so he would write something that they agreed with, but didn’t have to put their names behind.
