We’ve discovered many planets in the habitable zone, but the majority (if not all) will be completely unfit for life. This is because those worlds may be dressed completely inappropriately for the conditions. (Doodly in thread form: Part 1/3)

When JAXA’s mission swoops down to bite one of the Martian moons, it may gather information not just on the moon’s origin but also on how the habitat on Mars evolved. (A blog by me for ISAS・JAXA Cosmos, featuring work by .)

After deep debate, I cancelled my flight home via China (not deep) but didn’t rebook (deep) from concern for my parents & disabled sibling. Hard to tell how all will develop, but ain’t no one want Daily Mail headline, “Immigrant brings deadly virus to home of vulnerable adults”!

When the journal referee rejects your paper because they think the concept has no value. ...and this refusal is approved by two scientific editors... And then the journal asks you to review a paper for which a previous referee has now become unavailable.

You've discovered an Earth-like planet. Situated 51.0% into the habitable zone, with a volcanic rate 8.49×the Earth & covered by 97.0% land, the average temperature is 12.52°C (54.5°F). Discover more about your world here:

Earth-Like is a website and twitter bot that lets you build your own Earth-like world. Earth-Like begins with a planet that resembles our Earth today; by making changes to various factors, you can change the conditions on our planet.

I have flights to visit my family in a few weeks. That connects through Shanghai. And is not refundable. On an unrelated note, I would like to announce my close affiliation for the Brexit Party and my hope I will be invited to a crowded, intimate gathering while in the UK.

Wild alignments of exoplanet orbits might be common, from events like planet scattering. Tidal forces between the star & planet then tug the planet until it realigns with the star’s spin. … except in hot stars, which exert weak tidal forces due to their small convective region.

Many exoplanets are on orbits misaligned with their star --notes Yasushi Suto (Tokyo)--so the direction of the orbit doesn’t match the star's spin. Weirder is that planets around hot star are more likely to be misaligned. But why should the nature of the star effect an orbit?
