I still have a google alert set up for Davey Browne Jr, the subject of my book, and every so often I get pinged because his death gets thrown in as an aside to a description of the illustrious boxing career of the guy who knocked him out, and I find it deeply unsettling.

Today, the heard a story from a disabled renter who was evicted after insisting on basic repairs. Their ensuing struggle to find suitable housing neatly encapsulates what happens when the unfair rental market and lack of accessible housing collide:

Not even the NSW premier wants to be associated with Matthew Guy

Perrottet says he hasn’t spoken to Victorian Liberal leader Matthew Guy before today’s announcement. “I'm not sitting here at a Labor Party fundraiser. I'm sitting here with a premier who wants to get things done and look after his people,” he says.

The WA government has also decided it's not a priority. South Australia, where there was previously opposition, has changed its tune since it changed its government. Everyone else has indicated they'll implement the standards. NSW and WA are the only outliers.

Nobody hears "building standards" and thinks, ooh, what an exciting topic. But basic accessibility standards should be built into all new homes, because they create a home that's liveable for everyone – and the NSW govt has decided, nah we won't do that

It's interesting seeing this discourse develop around day jobs for money vs work you enjoy and define yourself by. Can I suggest everyone brush up on their Marx, tho? He's done all the hard yards for you, comrades. He's got that alienated vs unalienated labour thing down pat

Imagine: three generations of your family lived in the same house for 40 years. Then a stranger turns up at the door just before Christmas and says you’ve got to get out, we’re going to demolish your home. That’s what happened to the people at Barak Beacon

Nothing has made me more outraged today than playing around with this interactive. I gave everyone free uni, boosted healthcare everywhere, built enough social housing to meet demand, and so much more, and I STILL HAD BILLIONS LEFT

Also: this is an extension of the "period power" movement, surely? Its advocates range from those who say it's worthwhile to track your cycle and log your moods etc because you'll notice patterns – and you will! – to those who tell you that it's your witchy destiny

I am all for women having a better understanding of how their individual hormonal cycle affects their day to day life – understanding your body is important! – and we definitely need more research on it, but I am not sure this is quite the research we need.

In the last two days the local tawny frogmouths have started sitting on their nest (which they recently redecorated with flowers - true!!) so everyone can rest assured that spring is actually coming now

so Morrison is basically saying Labor, the media and other critics forced him to take up the powers (even though he took health and finance in early 2020, before many major criticisms began - and home affairs and treasury in May 2021, when things were relatively quiet)

‘Treated as a third-class citizen’: patients who need Medicare most struggle to find a GP who bulk bills. Thank you to everyone who has reached out so generously with their stories for this series so far in the hope of making some kind of change.

I had a 3-minute telehealth call to refill a prescription last week, which has ALWAYS been bulk billed in the past. Got a call from the front desk after with a $98 bill. The worst part was trying to read my credit card number out while hysterically crying. Not my finest hour.

My local clinic used to bulk bill across the board, they’ve switched to mixed billing in the last week. Charging $85 an appointment now for anything after hours or telehealth (and quoting $85 for actual bulk billed appointments which surely is a barrier to care)
