The events are starting to fetishize war. They were more solemn once. Now that the Boer War and WW1 diggers are all gone and WWII veterans become few in number, the rose coloured glasses come on and the sheer misery of war gets forgotten.

So agree with this. So many journalists - mostly at Murdoch and Nine - are actually commentators, not journalists. The reason they refuse to call themselves commentators is they want to piggy back off the cultural power and significance of “journalism”. The game is up.
