the object of terrorism is to use violence to advance your political program, right? so, then all of a sudden, weird crackpot ideas about entitlement to sex are in the most important paper in the country. under a certain view, that's a success, correct?

This is what warmongerings racists said to me when, after 9/11, I said that it really is important to understand the basis of the motivating grievance, and to ask whether there's anything to it.

I agree it's important to understand grievances but in this case I don't think lack of sex is the actual grievance. That's a misunderstanding of incel culture which can be cured by spending a little time reading incels.

And you have nailed the next step in the argument! "Radical islamists just hate freedom and want to destroy us. Asking whether the rise of a rancid ideology is in any way connected to underlying structural causes can't possibly help and guts our resolve to shut down the threat."

Well, that's not entirely crazy honestly. I mean you have this liberal faith that everything is just a matter of finding a rational administrative solution. That there's a structural cause we can tinker with. Some people are just existential enemies.

I wouldn't foreclose asking the questions, but also don't assume you are gonna get the answer you want.

The problem is already starting, "oh, maybe theres some way to deal with their grievances, maybe we can find an administrative solution, more sex workers, robots, etc." Well maybe they are belligerent misogynists and can't accept our society?

I find it amusing that this entire threat is premised on the assumption that Ross is proposing to "solve the incel problem by providing them with sex robots" when that isn't his point at all. As if people have lost the ability to read without jumping to an occasion for outrage.

Ross writes with great clarity, yet he seems to impel otherwise intelligent people to cast an incomprehension spell upon themselves.

      1) it's not that people can't comprehend it, it's that he writes from a place of either deep ignorance or dishonesty on almost everything the essay touches on. He misunderstands or misrepresents:

          4) Like so much Douthat, it's glib and superficial in a way that can only be premised on a refusal to engage deeply with the actual work of those conversant in and engaged substantively in the topics at hand. To wit: ignorant or dishonest. Or both

          5) & of course the implicit theme is Douthat's standard: the *real* cause of incel rage is the loss of "traditionalism," & the only *true* solution is a return to that mythic traditional order, & rejection of modernity. He's basically an ostensibly more civil Jordan Peterson
