Stephen King talks about this in Danse Macabre. The fundamental premise of horror is "The unknown has entered into the protagonist's world and that is EVIL." There are many ways to structure this, but it's very hard to make it 'progressive.'

Example: the movie "Get Out" is TRYING to be progressive, but when you get down to it the narrative is "Those nice looking out-group strangers are actually not so nice and they secretly want to hurt you."
