You really own nothing. When a man had a place in something larger than himself, his place meant that everything was 'his', in a certain and limited way. Now, a man has nothing but whatever he can grab and keep for a little while.

It's not that most men are at the bottom of the hierarchy - a place at the bottom would be a place within something larger at least - it's that there is no bottom, because there is no hierarchy, and no order, and no society any longer, only a wasteland roamed by wolves.

When you can identify with your larger society and its values - when it is 'yours' - it makes tolerable that very little else will ever truly be yours. All of us, whatever our values, have been dispossessed by the abolition of society.
