Every signal is a status signal. Yours is a NRx signal. Mine, by definition, must be opposition of some sort. The article is reporting someone else's survey result, and the subjects of that survey are signaling their status as gender-nonconformant.

Every signal is not a status signal, except for values of status so small as to deprive the word of meaning.

The status signal is “I’m special and non conformist” in the typical adolescent way of being special and non conformist. Like being goth or something.
