The main line of scholarly reasoning goes that societies construct 'imagined communities' (cultures) by 'othering' groups that are marginal to them; but doesn't this narrative imply there was already a difference to begin with? What came first, the 'otherness' or the 'othering'?
The other was intensified when communities homogenized with language due to print capital, at least that's what Anderson believed.

The R. I. Moore "Persecuting Society" hypothesis centers on events that precede print by quite a bit, so the debate has to start a much earlier point in time (w/ Herodotus and Hecataeus for example)
