It's very sad - It can be read as 'even if you have skills, you necessarily need co-authorship with top scientists to succeed'. A reminder that academia is not just about your research and your findings
Top cited scientist is not the same as top scientist.
What is meant by "a top scientist"? Are you measuring by number of citations?
Seems exactly how they measure "top". So getting hundreds of papers published by low quality journals citing one's friends makes them "top scientists"? 
is it causal or correlational - ie you're already privileged if you can get that co-authorship?
Did the junior researcher have to stay in the same field to become a top scientist?
