2\We analysed the careers of 22K scientists in 4 disciplines, and showed that coauthoring at least *one* paper with a top-cited scientist during the first 3 career years leads to a long-term competitive advantage with respect to peers.pic.twitter.com/7dq8G4Xzz0

3/This effect is not equally strong across the cohort though. Junior researchers (JRs) who are affiliated with top institutions and/or who are highly productive are already on the pathway to long-term career impact with high probability, regardless of their coauthors.pic.twitter.com/pzwM1VOlKt

4/In contrast, coauthorship with a top scientist truly has potential career-altering consequences for JRs who are affiliated with less prestigious institutions and/or are not among the top in terms of productivity.

5/The aforementioned competitive advantage materialises by means of a 'rich-get-richer' mechanism, where the early career opportunity to publish with a top scientist translates into a higher probability of doing it again at later career stages, and, eventually, to become one.

It's very sad - It can be read as 'even if you have skills, you necessarily need co-authorship with top scientists to succeed'. A reminder that academia is not just about your research and your findings

Top cited scientist is not the same as top scientist.

What is meant by "a top scientist"? Are you measuring by number of citations?

Seems exactly how they measure "top". So getting hundreds of papers published by low quality journals citing one's friends makes them "top scientists"? 🤔

is it causal or correlational - ie you're already privileged if you can get that co-authorship?

Did the junior researcher have to stay in the same field to become a top scientist?
