I personally think that people shouldn't let words hurt them. But they do, and that's understandable. It's also something that's going to take a while to change. So until then, is it really so hard for people to not be assholes?

Words can hurt more than feelings though. They contribute to an overall societal bias against marginalized groups that can lead to discrimination in applying for jobs, criminal sentencing, political representation, etc.
