I've seen the same. There's only one way to rapidly & steadily increase your social media following: pick a political faction, then dutifully & unyieldingly feed it what it craves, never challenge it. You can watch unfollows in real-time with any deviation from tribal orthodoxy:https://twitter.com/mtracey/status/1046395105274458113 …

I found it hilarious that the Maga crowd jumped on your bandwagon and didn't realize who you were

I've rarely received a compliment from them that didn't include an explicit recognition of wide-ranging disagreement. My Twitter feed is full of things like AOC & Corbyn support, Israel criticisms, Bolsonaro opposition, anti-Islamophobia content. Some factions accept heterodoxy.

I dunno you did ok out of your brief tryst with the right. A few appearances on Tucker don’t come for free. Twitter followers don’t necessarily translate to clicks. And they aren’t necessarily real people either.

Just think of the consternation if Twitter removed follower counts, so that following was a private act. Would be good for journalists & analysts to have that factor removed.

This is why journalist should stick to being journalist. Twitter turns them into opinion writers driven by click analytics, not fact reporters.

Seems like the confirmation bias in most people is stronger than their critical thinking.

Since I follow a number of journalists, what I’ve been surprised to learn is how much time contemporary journalists spend thinking about, writing about, and conducting wars among other journalists.

Exactly! We need to be made uncomfortable sometimes. We need to challenge ourselves, our ideas, beliefs and opinions - and not, hold rigidly to factions or groups. This is the power of individualism - the freedom to come to our own conclusions, through hearing many voices.

Thanks for pointing out that everyone is vulnerable to it, not just the regular folks. Blue checks tend to think they are a special class immune to such things.

Not sure that's entirely correct. I think many, including myself), have been red-pilled from 'Left' to(wards) 'Right'. It just doesn't happen the other way around :-)

It is for people too. Another viewpoint even if it collides with our own and is uncomfortable is NECESSARY to understanding the needs of all 'sides', as well as what troubles them

I think you just said social media reward all interactions equally, thoughtless or not, and thoughtlessness is obviously much more comfortable. Which was true before SM, but never so potentiated.

That's why I follow people like you, who are not afraid to go against the grain.

I disagree totally. For example, those people complaining to Tracey actually experienced another opinion than what they liked. this wouldn't have happened if they just kept watching cable tv. Social media is more destructive than WHAT exactly, in other words....

Funny you say that, I only stay followed to people who stick to principles over tribalism. It's why I like
@mtracey, political leaning doesn't really come into it with me as both sides, most of the time, can make equally good arguments.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
