That's one of the most toxic effects of social media: the reason it exacerbates polarization is because all the reward/punishment incentives are to cling mindlessly to one faction and never deviate. That's particularly destructive for journalists & other types of analysts.

I've rarely received a compliment from them that didn't include an explicit recognition of wide-ranging disagreement. My Twitter feed is full of things like AOC & Corbyn support, Israel criticisms, Bolsonaro opposition, anti-Islamophobia content. Some factions accept heterodoxy.
I dunno you did ok out of your brief tryst with the right. A few appearances on Tucker don’t come for free. Twitter followers don’t necessarily translate to clicks. And they aren’t necessarily real people either.
Just think of the consternation if Twitter removed follower counts, so that following was a private act. Would be good for journalists & analysts to have that factor removed.
This is why journalist should stick to being journalist. Twitter turns them into opinion writers driven by click analytics, not fact reporters.

Exactly! We need to be made uncomfortable sometimes. We need to challenge ourselves, our ideas, beliefs and opinions - and not, hold rigidly to factions or groups. This is the power of individualism - the freedom to come to our own conclusions, through hearing many voices.
Thanks for pointing out that everyone is vulnerable to it, not just the regular folks. Blue checks tend to think they are a special class immune to such things.
Not sure that's entirely correct. I think many, including myself), have been red-pilled from 'Left' to(wards) 'Right'. It just doesn't happen the other way around :-)

It is for people too. Another viewpoint even if it collides with our own and is uncomfortable is NECESSARY to understanding the needs of all 'sides', as well as what troubles them
I think you just said social media reward all interactions equally, thoughtless or not, and thoughtlessness is obviously much more comfortable. Which was true before SM, but never so potentiated.
It's not exclusive to social media.
That's why I follow people like you, who are not afraid to go against the grain.
I disagree totally. For example, those people complaining to Tracey actually experienced another opinion than what they liked. this wouldn't have happened if they just kept watching cable tv. Social media is more destructive than WHAT exactly, in other words....
Funny you say that, I only stay followed to people who stick to principles over tribalism. It's why I like @mtracey, political leaning doesn't really come into it with me as both sides, most of the time, can make equally good arguments.
