It's critically important that the country which lavishes the Saudi regime with weapons, intelligence, diplomatic cover, and constant praise not do anything to give legitimacy to dictators.

Preach. We've had/have war criminals holding federal offices. We CURRENTLY have an PROVEN torturer as the head of a major intelligence agency. Yeah... except that the concept of political legitimacy is literally older than the United States and is well established in the field of political science. Sometimes your cynicism just makes you look silly...

Yeah, except the idea of using a cold war method that has never worked got us nowhere. Using the containment doctrine for something like this didn't bring them to the table. Using a carrot a stick did.

You seem to be arguing someone else. I was merely pointing out that the concept of “legitimacy” isn’t “meaningless” and “invented”. I didn’t take any position other than that. You’re projecting.
-
You absolutely did mean what you said. Legitimizing is a word used in the containment doctrine.
-
Great, except in the context of this dialogue, legitimacy is about foreign entities recognizing your right to rule.
-
Recognition by other states is one way in which regimes can establish legitimacy.
