    I'm increasingly excited about our model of a homeless-run animal shelter we've created. The care our (formerly) homeless employees now give is highly professional and amazingly loving. We're now launching the adoption campaign. To help fund this project:

    With the total destruction of Museu Nacional of Rio de Janeiro, a 200-year institution, 20 million artifacts and historic building were lost, Museu Nacional is the equivalent of the British Museum in Brazil. Losing it is devastating, still a disgrace that could have been avoided

    Just 3 months ago, Brazil's largest paper, , reported the budgetary cuts the Museum suffered for years were so severe that many of its exhibits were shut & the public thought the museum was closed. Long known it was plagued by mainstenance dangers

    The only recent, comparable commemoration of a dead politician I can recall was the week-long (at least) homage to Reagan. There's no denying these rituals have strong religious overtones: not unlike the sanctification of Roman emperors on death, bolstering the secular religion:

    If we ever have a Jewish President is she going to get a proper burial or is American civic religion going to require this macabre parading of the corpse hither and yon?

    It's definitely not the only meaningful metric for evaluating candidates, but it matters a great deal who has spent the last several decades as part of the working class in the US, and who has been insulated and ensconced in the various halls of political & economic power.

    Democratic congressional candidates are releasing biographical ads in the mold of the viral video that helped propel the candidacy of in New York.

    Also, Putin loves dogs (he really does!). That's a far more significant character insight than passing someone a piece of candy. But fathom the (justified) moral indignation if someone suggested this offset his authoritarian or militaristic transgressions.

    Pol Pot was once dining with a group of leaders and passed the salt to someone at his table who couldn't reach it, and ever since, I've been absolutely enraged whenever people speak of him as some kind of monster.

    W is a delight and I’ll never stop feeling enraged for how he was treated for over a decade.

    One big reason so many in the media can't hold the crime of Iraq against people like McCain, Bush and David Frum - despite its criminality and the scale of atrocities - is because so many of them at the time participated in its promotion and in sliming its critics & opponents:

    Caught some of the 2003 with Senator McCain. He is funny, self-depricating, charming. But the way Iraq is joked about in the Meet the Press skit and Weekend Update is glib, hard to watch and a reminder of the massive systemwide failure to adequately question the policy.
