I'm increasingly excited about our model of a homeless-run animal shelter we've created. The care our (formerly) homeless employees now give is highly professional and amazingly loving. We're now launching the adoption campaign. To help fund this project:

A tragédia do Museu Nacional não foi um acidente. Aquilo foi descaso, foi irresponsabilidade, foi falta de prioridade. Não existe futuro para um país que não preserva sua memória

With the total destruction of Museu Nacional of Rio de Janeiro, a 200-year institution, 20 million artifacts and historic building were lost, Museu Nacional is the equivalent of the British Museum in Brazil. Losing it is devastating, still a disgrace that could have been avoided

  4. In politics, "corruption" is often thought of as an isolated ethical problem. In Brazil, the theft of public resources by politicians and oligarchs - finally being exposed - has been so vast that it poses danger to the public: endangering their health, opportunity & heritage.

  5. Just 3 months ago, Brazil's largest paper, , reported the budgetary cuts the Museum suffered for years were so severe that many of its exhibits were shut & the public thought the museum was closed. Long known it was plagued by mainstenance dangers

  6. The raging fire that destroyed Brazil's National Museum didn't just permanently eradicate some of the nation's most vital artifacts. It destroyed a center of research and science, caused by decades-long government neglect. This reporter first reported on that neglect 27 years ago

I interviewed today by video and she's as impressive, informed and passionate a candidate as she is unconventional and unscripted. Having actual working-class representation in the Senate would change, and improve, a lot. Look for our interview early this week:

In 11 days, NY Dems will nominate the next Attorney General, arguably the most important legal job in the country at this moment in history. We need a strong, experienced, uncompromised, AG. I am an anticorruption expert and take no corporate donations. I hope I earn your vote.

"Dark Money" - directed by the phenomenal director Kimbery Reed ("Prodigal Sons") - is highly worth seeing, a documentary about the efforts of Montanans of all types to keep big, out-of-state, secret corporate money from controlling their politics & lives

Delaware politics has never seen anything like Kerri Evelyn Harris - a progressive, black, LGBT Iraq War vet giving Sen. Tom Carper the primary challenge of a lifetime. What gives? A compelling candidate, and voters sick of pro-business centrism. My column

Obviously, the more we get to believe that our leaders are people of unusual, even unique, moral virtue, courage and benevolence, the better we get to feel about ourselves and the nationalism that shapes our identity. It's a form of tribal re-affirmation.

The only recent, comparable commemoration of a dead politician I can recall was the week-long (at least) homage to Reagan. There's no denying these rituals have strong religious overtones: not unlike the sanctification of Roman emperors on death, bolstering the secular religion:

It's definitely not the only meaningful metric for evaluating candidates, but it matters a great deal who has spent the last several decades as part of the working class in the US, and who has been insulated and ensconced in the various halls of political & economic power.

Also, Putin loves dogs (he really does!). That's a far more significant character insight than passing someone a piece of candy. But fathom the (justified) moral indignation if someone suggested this offset his authoritarian or militaristic transgressions.

Pol Pot was once dining with a group of leaders and passed the salt to someone at his table who couldn't reach it, and ever since, I've been absolutely enraged whenever people speak of him as some kind of monster.

One big reason so many in the media can't hold the crime of Iraq against people like McCain, Bush and David Frum - despite its criminality and the scale of atrocities - is because so many of them at the time participated in its promotion and in sliming its critics & opponents:
