adding to taboo tactics: - for web challs: trying usernames/passwords often used by other teams and stealing their exploits AND/OR looking at their websites where they host XSS payloads - for LPE challs: searching writable locations/process lists for exploits used by other teams
LOL guilty
begging for hints- guilty; guessing flags- yep, when we have most of a flag (e.g. AI challenge); abusing clusters- yup, we’re a uni team after all; renting VPS to brute- yup, renting nearby AWS for lower latency.
haven’t done anything worse than taboo, but definitely done everything above that (even had an energy drink that one time at SECCON then decided I was never going to use coffee or Red Bull ever again)
I'd add "publishing backdoored CTF tools"
In a recent CTF a teammate remarked that they were avoiding an online tool that was obviously written by a competing CTF team...
"hacking the scoreboard" should be in there somewhere
The @HushCon CTF was won this year by the team that hacked the scoreboard, which is explicitly called out as fair play in the rules.
IMO these artificial constraints detract from the utility of it all, and turn what should be a hacking competition into a glorified game of Sudoku.

No guessing, cant nmapmapping (or get a permanent ban) and high quality challenges.
Only 3 winners out of 700 participants, 4days remaining 'til the end.
Are there measures put in place to prevent napping, guessing, etc? Or is that just in the terms and conditions ?
