The smart pointer’s arrow operator was overloaded.

As a beta test, the signs were manually operated by a single person. The test went well and CA rolled the signs out to an additional highway but rather than helping, it started to make traffic worse. The single employee couldn’t keep up with the rapidly changing conditions. 2/

As part of a smart highway initiative to improve lane balancing during highway congestion, California introduced lane pointer digital signs above the highway which displayed an arrow to indicate which lane drivers should stay in. 1/
