Those who write code are honored. Those who write words are dismissed, undermined. Anyone can write and everyone has (usually a terrible) opinion on what content should be published. And yet words remain the most essential building blocks of all websites and all findability.

I find that some managers have an inflated view of their writing skills. I also receive poorly-written content from people, and when I point out obvious errors, the reply is "it was approved by my manager."

Everyone thinks they can write and the problem is it takes work to prove them wrong. It's easy to know if you can't write code because it simply doesn't work. Bad writing 'works' in the sense that it doesn't visibly break things.

And yet, there’s a whole SEO industry that’s evolved to teach people to write rubbish to trick the code—which is itself only trying to find relevant answers. If only we had the courage to focus on simpler, better and clearer writing. So many layers of effort would not be wasted!

Why pay to have professionals design and develop a website and then use a non-professional to write your content? It doesn't make sense. Just because you can write doesn't mean you should.

Classic Ian Malcolm dilemma. I agree with you though. Best sites are professionally produced through and through.

Infinite typing theorem 🤔 Given enough time/typewriters I am sure a load of animals could write the works of Shakespeare; but they’d wallpaper the trees with the manuscripts, or cover their notebooks with it. Just because anyone can do a thing doesn’t mean that’s the thing done.

100%. The content isn't just an add-on to the design; it *is* the design. Every UX bootcamp out there should be teaching this. And this should be required reading: https://justinjackson.ca/words.html

We have moved past the age of words, through the age of pictures, into the age of video, and soon VR/AR. The cellphone is mightier than the sword, and the platform is mightier still.
