I tried to type “themself” three times and autocorrect kept changing it. So I see the deck is stacked against me.

I asked someone at the ACES conference last year why not just use “themself” and while that person said “no way” they really didn’t have a good reason why .

One of the assumptions we make is assuming the existence of unified communities, such as the "disability community"--which does not agree on language. Why you're better off asking for personal preference.

So this is as much an issue for the writer as for the editor. The writer needs to know to ask (And ask in a respectful way.).

That’s interesting, because I think groups like the American Cancer Society push cancer survivor. As one, I’m ambivalent. But my students ask last week when talking about preferred terms how you can satisfy everyone.

It depends on who you’re editing for and what the organization’s mission is. For us, there’s a strong moral/ethical mission alongside the journalistic one (covering marginalized peoples, etc.), so it makes sense for the copy desk to push representative language.

This is something I tell my editing students all the time. There are times to break rules (or I really say guidelines), and it’s an editors job to know when that is.

There is room for both, and they should definitely coexist! You have to know your audience — which is a copy editor’s specialty. Having rules is just as important as breaking them on occasion, for a purpose.

Do you advocate one style over the other or do you think there’s a place for both depending on the audience and content?
