Based on public surveys, there are around 250,000 hate crimes in the US each year. A media outlet could easily pick out a dozen of these on any given year and hype them up like it's a new trend, even if it's not at all.

This analysis is really weak. It relies on hate crimes reported to police, which based on surveys miss the *vast* majority of hate crimes. So any increase could just be people reporting those hate crimes or police paying attention to them, due to, say, activists or news events.

ah so if some group was to suffer in increase in hate crimes, we'd never be able to detect or report on it? I see what you're saying but truly an unfortunate alternative there
