Based on public surveys, there are around 250,000 hate crimes in the US each year. A media outlet could easily pick out a dozen of these on any given year and hype them up like it's a new trend, even if it's not at all.

I think it's fairly implausible to claim that there hasn't been an uptick in Asian hate crimes, but also it's a little weird that the most widely-cited stats are collected by an organization that was founded in January 2020.
