So proud of @JosephJafaari, whose intrepid reporting prompted Penn's lt. gov to intervene -- last year's Tow Fellow : Her parents said she had a month to live. The judge put their daughter in jail anyway

Holman Prison has the dubious distinction of being one of the most violent, dangerous, and dysfunctional prisons in the country. Good riddance to it.

The fake "get out early" offers made to ppl in prison could be its own beat — there are that many of them. I looked into "Oaks of Justice," a company telling prison families they have a "state of the art" home confinement program:

I love that has taken on the "scams targeting prisoners" beat. It may be hard to measure the impact of this work, but how many families will now steer clear of this alleged con artist and save thousands of dollars? At :

A police union spokesman called Kimberly Gardner a “menace" who must be removed “by force or by choice.” Kim Foxx has been targeted by white nationalists. Aramis Ayala received a noose in the mail. Now black female prosecutors are fighting back.

To pay off debts, inmates in Mississippi’s little-known restitution centers must work grueling low-wage jobs, pay rent and endure strip searches. Don't miss this special investigation from and corps member .

Atatiana Jefferson died in October. Her father died in November. Her mother died today. This is one of the saddest stories I've ever seen, and it is only getting sadder.

Great explainer -- and exemplary journaistic transparency -- how news orgs collaborated to blow the whistle on Mississippi's sick system of imprisoning people for debts and exploiting their labor. Winners include McDonald's and other huge corporations.

The corrections department took her paychecks, she said, giving her back just $10 a week—all in quarters—so she could buy things like soap and deodorant. Here's what life is like inside Mississippi's debtors prisons. via /

There’s a place in Mississippi where judges sentence people not to an amount of time, but to an amount of money. How to get out of these jails? Work at a burger joint. Or a catfish plant. New, by & me, for +:
