Were you not expecting thrust during both high speed parts of the stroke? Is a recovery stroke common?

Yes, we expected thrust on the "instroke" but not on the "outstroke" when the fin moves away from the body. By analogy with the human breaststroke, thrust is only on the power stroke. But fish are better ... generating thrust both parts due to their flexible fins!

Looks like the size of fin is important as the thrust is amplified twice probably due to flexing effect. Very interesting evolutionary feature.
