i could literally go on about this all day but no one has understood why doctor who works as a modern television show better than rtd: we can never connect or truly understand the doctor. we CAN learn to love the companion, our entry into the doctor’s world.

that’s why chris chibnall’s era was an abject failure; the companions became secondary, timeless child took all the air out of the narrative & character development, the yaz course correction was too little too late and flawed, she didn’t feel as real as rose or donna or even amy

and that was an inspired choice, particularly given how all consuming billie piper was to the show, she became (and, tbh, still is) the heart of doctor who. rose is such a good character because she’s a flawed and multi-faceted protagonist, more so than the doctor.

the most important decision russell t davies made as showrunner of doctor who was to re-centre the shows narrative around rose and show how much travelling with the doctor affects and changes her, but also how the doctor is affected and changed by her
