I wrote a OpEd on why we need to expand the conversation around . We need to think about the unique risks for disabled people & others for whom bias is particularly hard to detect & address /1

Hi Suresh - sorry, the banner warning maybe was not super clear, but Overleaf as a whole won't be down. The partial downtime applies to some services, we don't expect that users in the editor will notice an interruption. We also expect the maintenance to be completed quickly.

Hi Irene - sorry if the message wasn't clear on this - the entire site isn't going down. We expect most users will not see any interruption if they're working in the editor, and the maintenance we are carrying out will be completed very quickly.

  6. but this resource compiled by and is a phenomenal look at the use of pretrial risk assessments nationwide. The level of detail in the database is phenomenal. What an effort.

Last month, I went to Lockport City in upstate New York, right after the public school district’s facial recognition system had been turned on. School district officials are adamant that the tech benefits the students (including kids as young as 5).

A great thread on the dutch court decision against SyRI. As many have called for, the use of a rights framework via ECHR to invalidate the law (rather on on GDPR/explanations grounds) is interesting.

Interesting! Have we seen other examples of court cases where AI/algorithms have been outlawed on the basis of human rights abuse? I thought the GDPR was the best hope for AI regulation but perhaps there's another way...

gives a window into the architectural horrors lurking in the heart of emacs, and why it's so hard to get it to do things that we take for granted in modern GUIs... like decent font rendering

This is a great article about the challenge of implementing ethical practices in the tech world. Separately, looking forward to more great storytelling from the people at

So I was not crazy when I stated loud and clear at in one of the CRAFT sessions that this risk assessment stuff, all the more so in criminal law, would not be legal in the Europe! & the Dutch Court Clearly refers to Art 8 ECHR and the when declaring it illegal!🥳

One of the things you learn when you study the history of technology is that, despite the amount of faith we’re encouraged to put in complex technological systems, these systems are quite fragile and fail constantly.
