Did you know that there are at least 50 named streams in Seattle ranging from Broadview to Yesler? Here's a link to a three-part post I wrote about them, the origin of their names, and where they are. It is based on this map.

  2. Just had my first sighting of these urban birds. Not sure what species. Any guesses?

  3. Absolutely. It is clear that the job of removing this menace is up to the people. We need to vote. We need to encourage others to vote. We can do it. We have to do it.

You got me. It's been my experience that researchers like it when a curious member of the media asks them about their work.

Curiously it's the second such conference recently that said they were restricting media spaces. Do they think we'll arrive en masse and take up all the seats of more worthy people?

Did I miss something here? My correspondence with a conference organizer about getting a press pass. So how does restricting media passes help get articles out in the media?

Amazing how rivers do the same thing the world over. Here's a shot of Bowknot Bend on the Green River, Utah.

Or sometimes, as in the case of the Denny Regrade, they simply lowered them from an old hill to the new flat landscape.

Yeah, pretty crazy to see the swarming snow flakes up there after seeing only a few down on the street, 400 feet lower. Great example how elevation dictates snowfall around here.

Great, easy access illustration of what happens in Seattle with snow and our hills.

Amazing that those homes are still there. By the way, my Volunteer Park walk in "Seattle Walks," goes down 14th, where I highlight an old carriage post. Pretty darned nifty.

Still a few spaces left in my walk this Saturday in the Denny Regrade area. Photo of Denny Hotel. White lines in lower right are logs holding up the slope.

Just finished Nan Shepherd's "The Weatherhouse." Incandescent writing particularly her observations about the natural world. Looking forward to starting "The Living Mountain." Thx to for introducing her books to me.
