random information since I happen to be looking at it today: I've been a professor since 2003 and during that time I've had 8 grants funded by NSF, and had 16 proposals declined by them

I suspect this is on the low side for someone at an R1, but I don't particularly enjoy writing proposals, I don't like the overhead associated with managing grants, and I really hate inefficient use of public funds

Grant writing, among other things, was one of the reasons I didn't persue a career in academia, despite thinking that's what I wanted way back when I started grad school.

it's definitely one of the downsides, but my belief is that Canada is quite a bit more sane than the USA

Yes, I hear NSERC is much less of mess than NSF. Admittedly, I don't know much about it aside from what myt friends tell me. I suspect any big grants are always a shitshow.
