I've never been much of a Devin Townsend-head, but I can't believe how good Empath is. There's ... a musical theater-ish passage ... a spurt of reggae ... Chad Kroeger ... lots of heavy riffs, grooves, screaming, and operatic shrieking ... but it never feels gimmicky.

Still listening to Empath, and I get the feeling that I will for the foreseeable future. It's so good. Zappa and Bungle comparisons fit, but they also do a disservice. It has to be nearly impossible to make a careening, whiplash-filled album like this so focused and listenable.

Dude - You dropped a reference to Big Wreck earlier this year, and now are doing a review of DT?
Also, your writing is good.
