Most valuable information is widely accessible. Great books of centuries past are free online. Thinkers of today argue publicly on Twitter. YouTube is a lecture hall that seats millions. Podcasts are private tutors for the masses. A golden age for the self-motivated learner.

Remember when biofuels were hailed as the solution to fossil fuels? What happened? This is our third technology case study. Strategic lessons include (i) first focus on high-margin, low-volume products (ii) avoid overpromising results for short-term gains

"The fundamental problem is ensuring that AI systems are able to uncover the models that govern our values." A solution requires answers to two distinct questions: How can we pass those models on? And what are our values in the first place?

Dear , I feel guilty at being part of your generation, so have attempted to offset your flights for you. If others join in, maybe your holiday will even end up being carbon positive. Best wishes, Timothy Gowers (Details about offsetting in tweet below.)

Academics should be grateful when people point out objective errors in their work (in this case, accidentally overstating variance explained by 10x). It’s unseemly to write articles—like the Quillette one—attacking your critics for noting those errors.

  16. Tony Blair and John Major aren’t in power anymore. They aren’t the “elite”, and the Brexiteers are in power. They should take responsibility for the economic damage that has already occurred, and the damage to our standing in the world.
