Oh no, ach, helas, the greatest living literary scholar is dead. The world is now far poorer for his absence. As poorer as it was richer for his presence(s). George Steiner, Prodigious Literary Critic, Dies at 90

Ulrich's year off from life, readying him& us through vulnerable sense of deep loneliness & despair; mystical sense of expectation; decision to either live like everyone else, enact one of his many possibilities, write a book, or kill himself; death of his

Not sure where everyone is or where we are supposed to be according to plan, but I apologize for saying that the really exciting parts start 500 pages in. Into the Millennium really begins at page 726. Hold on to your hats.

On train to NYC, I finished 's marvelously heartening book See What I See, which, for me, is about the power of art to help us bear our beautiful brokenness; the force of "form fronting for feeling," and the essential gift of human receptivity.

It's snowing (big flakes) and I love you. I feel depressed. I was all yesterday at the college and got exhausted and penetrated by a sense of the futility of teaching. Who listens, who cares? Why do I do it? Why do I do anything? -Letter to Brigid Brophy, January 1966

Working all afternoon on new translation of Musil's play "Die Schwaermer," once translated as "The Enthusiasts". Am torn between "The Visionaries" & "The Ecstatics". It is a wild and brilliant play, playful and fierce, daring and silly, deep and superficial.

Musil was fiercely critical of Expressionism's tendency to value emotion over ideas. Arnheim too admits that "he could not stand them and their inflated verses".

Same chapter, p.440, on "the General's poet, Arnheim uses words similar to words Musil uses in essays to criticize Expressionism...the image of a dog howling at the moon in particular as a description of the Expressionist poet barking out great emotions.

Chapter 89 refers to a movement translated as "Accelerationism". See Musil's gloss, "Intensivism," from Thought Flights, for more of the similar!!
