I always thought the #WHCD was boring, decadent, and vein. I still think it those things. But, now I get how it's also canary in a coal mine test. If the President or the party in power has too much pride to submit or claims gross violation, the canary dies.

The irony that those on the right, who have long criticized the WHCD for its symbolism of a dangerous intimacy between the press and their subjects, the WH, is that they’re now complaining they the relationship is too combative. They need to pick a fucking argument.

Right. It’s a circle jerk, for sure. Those praising Trump for rejecting the invitation will certainly point to this problem, but it’s a red herring. Dissolving the Press-Beltway complex was never Trump’s goal. He’s not attending because of the roasting he endured in 2011.
