Please help me help a student. Comment and share. When did you know the "true purpose" of your Ph.D.? Thank you community! #demystifythePhD

As expected. I left "true purpose" vague on purpose. My thoughts... you start off thinking there is some grand scheme and you finish realizing how insignificant it all really is. Just the first step in a long journey.

AND I think if we could help students realize they don't need to have some amazing special purpose, just love the work and do it, they could be so much happier.

I will say this,
@JenayRobert: Over the past several months (near the end of my phdlife), I've become enamored with my model. I feel like I built something useful. And, I'm proud to have made a map for myself that bounds what I know and what I don't. I earned that map.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

I guess for me it’s partially a request to define terms. “True purpose” could be “What’s your PhD actually about?” or it could be some notion that my PhD has some sort of innate, inherent motivating force for it’s impact on my life and the world.

In terms of what my PhD is actually about, that really only became solid once I started writing my diss. For what it meant to my personal dev? That's slowly revealed itself throughout grad school, and continues to postgrad.
