There's one more entertaining step to that, too - there's a type of memory that you have to literally flash with UV light to erase it. Don't see that as much anymore, but the term stuck around for reprogrammable memory.

Oh! I had those back in high school for trying to modify VTEC timings and such on friends cars. Even tried bringing the chips into a tanning bed with the windows facing down to flush them. (It did not work.)
