I think it’s interesting because among Americans who are mobile, their groups reflect their prior identifications, while those who lack mobility are probably more likely to identify with their inherited location.

What I mean to say is parties, wonks & pundits are more like intentional communities than tribes, while ‘tribal’ dynamics in the US tend to be more local & I largely think they do mostly good (think extended gift & kin networks as a social safety net against capital predation)
