The Asch Experiment is a good precursor. People conformed to the social expectation. To do so, they need rationalizations and coherent explanations. I need a good term though and I'm sure it exists!

The Asch Experiment is a good precursor though. I vaguely remember there being work on elaborations but I'm away from my home base now. And, it happens with rumors a lot (but hard to prove). I'd hypothesis a lot isn't lying though. It's just reconstructed expectations.

It sounds related to post-event misinformation. That's usually thought of as new information contaminating someone's memory for an event. But maybe it still works here. For more, check out Elizabeth Loftus' work.
