an interesting contrarian position I heard someone take on @greaterthancode the other day was
"The Golden Rule is Bad Actually"
and they were absolutely right

the Golden Rule admonishes you to treat others as you want to be treated, but we're all different. you're not mean, you don't want to be treated the way I want to be treated. we're all unique

so the person proposed instead a different maxim: Treat others the way *they* want to be treated! it's an interesting flip, and worth considering as an alternative way of thinking about things

1/ Five years ago, I had a retort for this: "that's not possible." Like, if everyone is different, then the amount of information needed to mentally model their preferences approaches intractable. There will always be a mismatch, unless you are them.

2. That sounds sensible, even Rational™ -- until you try constructing examples. The big one? People have strong preferences about pronouns. Learning them isn't intractable. You just have to ask. People don't because it doesn't matter to them. The Golden Rule is a bad heuristic.
