Omfg was browsing through a sci job hunt advice column thing & it actually said “if you’re a real scientist you should be using R.” Note that I’m not sharing the link cause that is frickin garbage.

IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT PROGRAM YOU USE TO DO YOUR STATS & FIGURES, AS LONG AS YOU UNDERSTAND THE PURPOSE OF WHAT YOU’RE DOING

Using R doesn’t make you a “real scientist” and using Excel doesn’t make you a lesser scientist

That column really irked me. “Oh well I know how to use ALL THE PROGRAMS but I only use X because I’m a real scientist”

No, it means you either only have regular access to X, choose to only use X out of comfort, or you don’t actually know how to choose the best tool for the job.

TLDR: you’re not convincing anyone that you’re smarter by trashing people that use different software. You’re annoying & should stop talking for a while.

If I worked with anyone who said "use [X] or go home," I hope I'd be in the position to just go home.
@dataandme: I don't mean to drag you into a possible flame war, but as someone highly visible in#rstats, I'd really appreciate your voice here.2 replies 0 retweets 1 like -

"if you’re a real scientist you should be using…"
Regardless of how that sentence ends, I hate it! (pre-emptive: Yes, I understand it could say ...scientific method — still a lame line!)
It's a useless way to frame advice, and just perpetuates the "tyranny of the shoulds"1 reply 2 retweets 5 likes -
I have no idea what article this is (I imagine it'd just make me mad), but even if I venture a guess that it's about reproducibility, there's really no need to make it language specific.
@ThePracticalDev's guide kinda says it all…pic.twitter.com/LbsRsbf5NM
