and they were absolutely right
1/ Five years ago, I had a retort for this: "that's not possible." Like, if everyone is different, then the amount of information needed to mentally model their preferences approaches intractable. There will always be a mismatch, unless you are them.

I wrote two responses. Maybe didn't nail it down in part (2), but that was the point. Like, it's just an excuse to be lazy. You should try; it doesn't take much time or effort; and, even if it did, that's how you would want to be treated.

2. That sounds sensible, even Rational™ -- until you try constructing examples. The big one? People have strong preferences about pronouns. Learning them isn't intractable. You just have to ask. People don't because it doesn't matter to them. The Golden Rule is a bad heuristic.
