5/ Seriously, this isn't a dig at the medium. There are some incredible videos that allow for easily-accessible knowledge, imparted at stupendous rates. (Especially some of the
#scicomm stuff.) The problem is the accidentally granted power vacuum.1 reply 0 retweets 4 likesShow this thread -
6/ And, of course, the unwillingness of
@youtube to act like a community, saying, "no, if you can't pass a basic Turing test of human decency, you can't share here."1 reply 0 retweets 3 likesShow this thread -

Devil's advocate: YouTube is just a platform for hosting videos that's largely agnostic about content. IMO it's mostly entertainment (with a few exceptions being actual substance).

That was my opinion up until the past week. But, take a random walk through any even vaguely political topic, and you'll find rationalizations for every horror imaginable. And, high-follower/like counts imbue infotainment with unwarranted (extremely profitable) authority.

True. I would say the same about large portions of Reddit, Facebook, Twitter, ... And before those "social media" hubs I would have said the same about random blogs and sites on the internet.

Oh absolutely. But the part I think I failed to appreciate is how much first-pass attention share youtube gets.

I guess my perspective is that most of YouTube is just random people's crap with no quality assurance. Searching for political topics there is similar to clicking on those political hashtags on Twitter... It's not going to be pretty.

I think it's processed and perceived very differently though. Passive consumption of video is easy, and has a lower threshold of critical thought. Tweets don't demand high cognitive effort, but it's still more than video.

I'm not sure which is worse though. You can see hundreds of batshit
#MAGA tweets on those political hashtags in the period of time it takes to watch one crazy YouTube video. And they're easier to mass-deploy with automation to create the illusion of consensus.1 reply 0 retweets 1 like
I don't think either is worse. But, I think paying attention to the dangerous of both matters. Most of my (still close) friends since high school haven't read a book since high school. They aren't on twitter. They don't use reddit. But, they youtube constantly.

Most of the people in my life like that are Facebook junkies. I watch a good amount of YouTube as entertainment but I've always seen it as that and avoid any political subjects or anything there. And I also upload programming videoshttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6tqFmkqznYJTzidBerHA8g/videos …
