1/ I think my failure here is mostly a perceptual thing. I prefer reading, so I can't imagine going to YouTube first for information.

Oh absolutely. But the part I think I failed to appreciate is how much first-pass attention share youtube gets.

I guess my perspective is that most of YouTube is just random people's crap with no quality assurance. Searching for political topics there is similar to clicking on those political hashtags on Twitter... It's not going to be pretty.

I think it's processed and perceived very differently though. Passive consumption of video is easy, and has a lower threshold of critical thought. Tweets don't demand high cognitive effort, but it's still more than video.
