IMO there is a genuinely difficult balance between the fact that more PhDs means more people get a chance to experience scientific research and potentially become academics, and the fact that "science by PhD" is used to keep researchers in precarious and low-paid employment.

I don't deny that the way the discussion is presented is often elitist/gatekeeping, but I also don't think it helps anyone to ignore what the 5% PhD->Tenure rate in a field like mine does to people's personal or professional wellbeing
