Also: based on a drastic overestimate of technological progress in computing. Mostly, technological progress outside of computing that was being made up through the late 70s hit the market in a few years, while that in computing took decades.

Or, rather, I should say: Outside of computing, to the extent that improvements in techniques became widely visible in the form of consumer products, they did so fairly quickly. Inside computing there were delays because different generations of devs didn't talk to each other.

We have made tremendous progress in virtually all areas, through automation, new materials, computerisation, electronics miniaturisation (which goes far beyond just "computing,"), etc.

My hot take: cheap computing power and cloud computing might be the most important technological progress in the 21st century so far. Cost economics of computing power allowing very lean IT infrastructure has made scaling up for businesses very easy --> great productivity boost
