Never ever checking rotten tomatoes or yelp is the sensible default.

I don't get this, can you expand? Is the sensible default checking other review sites or not using online reviews are all?

I think the idea of wanting an objective way of ranking subjective tastes means you select for the wrong thing.

Interesting -- do you think review scores give zero information? With all their drawbacks, that doesn't seem to be the case (to me).

Like, imdb scores are probably even worse than the tomatometer but a movie with 6.1 on imdb is overwhelmingly likely to be worse than one with 7.9 across many dimensions that are relevant to me.

Similarly, if you're standing on a street choosing between two restaurants that do the same cuisine with scores (4.4, 3.9), I see very few reasons to go to the one with the lower score. In particular if say, you're travelling and you only get one shot at that destination.

Full disclosure: this topic is dear to me, I always get into arguments with friends because they think I use scores too much :)
