Broadly agree, although you can occasionally develop heuristics relating to your own tastes. Horror movie panned by audiences + praised by critics = my new favorite movie

It would be cool if we could publish recipes like these in some platform :) Perhaps Twitter is the best we've got. Going back to cohorts, 'as rated by my Twitter contacts or as predicted by a model trained on their preferences' seems like a great feature.

Granted, I apply corrections to the score too. I just start with the score :) If a movie sounds interesting but it's got a low score, I look for reasons that the "average" audience could like it less than I could. Movies by or about women tend to be under-rated, for example.

Chinese or Indian restaurants tend to be under-rated in many western countries, even though they're often some of the best around (and in many places, great value). People on average are racist/biased against Asian culture. I usually do something like +0.3 to Google Maps reviews.
