They are in at least the narrow sense that they monopolize our attention. So here, by "work," I mean, "stand a chance to change that balance."

Yeah, I was seriously turned off of them when I found out there was no federation for identity. Anyone could go to a different pod/node/instance and claim my handle there, even if that system is federated with the one I use. Rife for impersonation and abuse.

Federated anything is a really complex problem; trying to tie together social media platforms with their vagaries in enforcing standards of behavior, let alone context cues and implicit in-group dynamics ..

I don't know how that's really ever going to work as anything other than a broadcast distribution mechanism for advertisers and blue-check folks who are selling their brand.

There was a time when I thought federated social media models are cool but not anymore Nowadays, I believe hyper-specialized fractured communities are cooler. Example: http://fast.ai forums for ML I think tools for semi-automatic moderation would be the next big thing
